We spent a day in the country and picked a lot of flowers. Our car was full of flowers inside! On the way home we had to stop at traffic lights , and there my wife saw the bookshelf.

It stood outside a furniture (家具)shop. "Buy it," she said at once. "We'll carry it home on the roof-rack (车顶架) . I've always wanted one like that . "

What could I do? Ten minutes later I was twenty dollars poorer, and the bookshelf was tied on to the roof-rack. It was tall and narrow, quite heavy too .

As it was getting darker, I drove slowly . Other drivers seemed more polite than usual that evening. The police even stopped traffic to let us through . Carrying furniture was a good idea.

After a time my wife said, "There's a long line of cars behind . Why don't they overtake (超车) ?"

Just at that time a police car did overtake. The two officers (警官)inside looked at us seriously when they went past . But then , with a kind smile they asked us to follow their car through the busy traffic. The police car stopped at our village church (教堂) . One of the offices came to me."Right, sir, " he said. "Do you need any more help now?"

I didn't quite understand . "Thanks, officer, " I said . "You've been very kind. I lived just down the road. "

He was looking at our things: first at the flowers, then at the bookshelf. "Well, Well, " he said and laughed . "It's a bookshelf you've got there ! We thought it was-er, something else . "

My wife began to laugh . Suddenly I understood why the police drove here .

I smiled at the officer. "Yes, it's a bookshelf, but thanks again." I drove home as fast as I could .1 . From the story we know that ___________.

B . the writer's wife didn't like the bookshelf at all

C . the writer was always glad to buy something for his wife

A . He could drive slowly and it was safe.

B . Other drivers would let him go first .

C . His wife could use a new bookshelf.

D . He could save a lot of money and time.

3 . Why were the police and other drivers so kind to the writer?

B . Because they didn't think it was polite to overtake a car with a bookshelf on it .

C . Because they thought somebody in the writer's family had died and he needed help .

D . Because they thought it was dangerous to carry a bookshelf on a car.

4 . Why did the writer's wife begin to laugh?

A . Because now she knew what mistake the police had made.

B . Because at last her husband understood why the police had driven to the church .

C . Because the officer was always looking at the flowers and the bookshelf.

D . Because the police had helped them a lot .

5 . When did the officers begin to realize (意识到)they had made a mistake?

5. What colour is Betty's hat?

It's Betty's.

It's small.

There is a map of England and a photo.

They're on the table.

It's black.

Have you ever wondered why birds sing? Maybe you thought that they were just happy. After all, you probably sing when you are happy.

Some scientists believe that birds do sing some of the time just because they are happy. However, they sing most of the time for a very different reason. Their singing is actually a warning to other birds to stay out of their territory.

Do you know what a “” is? A territory is an area that an animal, usually the male, claims (声称) as its own. Only he and his family are welcome there. No other families of the same species are welcome. Your house is your territory where only your family and friends are welcome. If a stranger should enter your territory and threaten you, you might shout. Probably this would be enough to frighten him away.

If so, you have actually frightened the stranger away without having to fight him. A bird does the same thing. But he expects an outsider almost any time, especially at nesting (筑巢) season. So a bird’s song, and it is usually enough to keep an outsider away.

Americans like to visit the national parks. In 1996, over 250,000,000 people visited areas which are managed by the National Park Service. Experts say that by 2012, 500,000,000 people per year will visit the parks. As a result, people are trying to think of ways to protect the parks from the crowds.

The crowding of the parks has caused several problems. One is that there is not enough space for all of the people who want to use the parks. To deal with this problem, you may have to book your tickets a few months ahead of time. The Park Service may also raise entrance fees (费) .

Another problem caused by increased park use is pollution. Some garbage and waste can be cleaned up, and the cleanup can be paid for by increased entrance fees. To cut down on noise people may use buses to travel around the parks. Officials may also limit the use of jet-skis, snow-mobiles, motor-boats, and sightseeing helicopters and planes.

The parks may also be in danger because of development that is going on around them. For example, around Yellow Stone Park, many hotels, golf courses, resorts, and other tourist attractions have been built. Some of these developments have effect on areas that are used by animals. People will have to learn to agree about ways to protect the parks. If they do not, there will soon be no reason to visit these national treasures.

43. Entrance fees may be increased _______.

A. because the National Park Service are short of money

B. only for the development of the national parks

C. to protect the animals D. mainly to limit the number of visitors

44. What is the most possible meaning of the underlined word “limited” in Paragraph 3?

A. Enlarged. B. Admitted. C. Controlled. D. Concerned.

45. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. High fees may probably keep some people out of parks.
